CAMRA Review
‘The Alma is a traditional Cambridge city pub, situated in the residential area between Hills Road and Trumpington Road on Russell Court. Within close proximity to the Cambridge Rail Station, The Botanic Gardens and many university departments and workplaces – The Alma has become an integral part of the community, with a distinctive neighbourhood feel.
The Alma instantly offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, created by its traditional interior design – with wooden floors, vintage beer barrels and memorabilia on the walls, from the moment you enter you are made to feel at home. There are many reasons to pay a visit to The Alma, one being that its a great place to pop in for a relaxing bite to eat – offering a fine selection of good pub food, including juicy homemade burgers, pies, steaks and fish & chips – the main attraction, however is its superb dedication to live sport!
Since taking over The Alma – Landlord, David Moyce has made it one of his personal goals to transform the pub into the first choice destination for watching live televised rugby in Cambridge – showing every major rugby match including the Six Nations, Heineken Cup, and the Guinness Premiership on their large HD and 3D screens placed around the pub. As well as being a sporting venue, The Alma also hosts some of the city’s finest live music – putting on regular live bands on Saturday, Wednesday evenings is the ever popular Songsmith Sessions with Ezio Lunedei, a singer songwriters’ open mic event which is recorded, with the best bits being aired on his local radio show.
With their regular Quiz Night on Thursday evenings with a £100.00 jackpot prize as well as others up for grabs every week, six great real ales, fine wines, free WIFI and all the sport you can shake a rugby ball at, you’ll find The Alma is probably your next favourite pub to visit.’
